REVIEW - The Stage - December 2010

Simple story-telling is so spellbinding that small children who hide under the seat to escape the baddie in a panto will go along with the most gory outcomes in a folk tale. Sarah Goddard and Tom Warwick win them over even before the show starts, and that rapport is crucial to what comes later.

A few Christmas trees, a mini-mountain and some hanging stars provide the setting. They mime everything from arctic animals to potters and shopkeepers and the audience supplies sound effects ranging from a fart to an exploding boy. In a Norwegian folk tale, Goddard is a cuddly bear and Warwick a wily old fox with a weakness for butter. That story is so jolly that by the time it gets to asking the audience for suggestions how an improvised story might develop, they don’t hold back.

In a masterpiece of improvisation and intuition, the actors weave in everything that’s thrown at them. They manage to get Simon Cowell fed to the voracious Clay Pot Boy and a smelly dragon in a gum ball machine killed by a penguin. It’s great fun, and as every performance will be different, the children will be begging to return for more.
